In the archive of the Max Planck Society, proposals from independent project organizers since 1900 that have never been realized have been collected, such as: a European Council of Mothers, formulas for the attainment of stable world peace, or pedagogical reform projects, just to name a few. Why were these proposals rejected? Which institutions never saw the light of day? What knowledge was excluded? And which researchers? Which story was not written?
Herbordt/Mohren sifted through these files and, in 2020 and 2021, created a new research society based on them, both online and on stage at the Rampe Theater: intergenerational, participatory, and committed. With guests from the arts, science, civil society and the neighborhood. In preparatory online labs, all participants design and create what knowledge the Society could be based on and how this knowledge can be stored, expanded and narrated. Knowledge was shared, new approaches were worked on and the fictional association was further designed. The theater space of the Theater Rampe in Stuttgart was just one of many venues. Other "societies" were from Berlin, Istanbul, Reykjavík, Salvador-Bahia, Vienna and Zurich.
In the Schaudepot you can expect: an introduction ‘The Society’ as a performance and a new research society with Melanie Mohren and Bernhard Herbordt; an encounter with a society member; a video archive of all previous encounters; the opportunity to become a society member yourself, or to propose one. And a society game. You will only feel imagined rain on your palms or start a conversation with a prolonged silence.
